Paraneoplastic Syndromes (PNS)

SPN

SPNs result from the presence of anti-tumor neuro-oncoprotein (intracellular) autoantibodies.

They manifest as abnormalities of the central and peripheral nervous systems, cerebellar degeneration, or sensory neuropathies.

Autoantibodies can be detected up to 5 years before the tumor appears.

The relevant antibodies are: Hu, Yo, and Ri; CV2; Ma2/Ta; amphiphysin; SOX-1; recoverin; Zic4; and Tr(DNER).

If SPN-associated antibodies are detected, the probability of a tumor is 95%; therefore, the presence of these antibodies warrants a thorough search for the tumor.

The associated neoplasms are: small cell lung carcinoma, neuroblastoma, thymoma, and cancers of the ovary, breast, uterus, and testicles.
