What is carrier testing?
Anyone can be a carrier of genetic variants (mutations) without knowing it. Carriers are generally healthy people; however, they run the risk of passing on a genetic disorder to their children, depending on the mutations they carry. Carrier testing is a type of genetic test that determines whether there is a risk of passing certain genetic disorders on to your child. This test should ideally be requested before pregnancy and always following a consultation with a medical geneticist.
Is this the right test for me?
Most people, regardless of their ethnicity or family history, are unaware that they may be carriers of a genetic variant (mutation) until they have a child affected by the disease.
- Couples planning a pregnancy who wish to know the risk of passing on genetic mutations that cause genetic disorders to their offspring;
