Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH) or array-CGH
Over the past 30 to 40 years, conventional karyotyping has been the gold standard test for detecting chromosomal abnormalities. A new method has recently emerged that allows us to go much further in the study of chromosomes, known as Comparative Genomic Hybridization or array-CGH
The use of aCGH technology is transforming clinical practice in genetic diagnosis.
The array consists of probes (covering the entire genome) made of synthetic oligonucleotides or BACs, to which the genomic DNA of the individual under study binds with the reference or control DNA, both of which have been previously labeled with different fluorochromes. Using specific digital analysis software, it is possible to measure the fluorescence intensity obtained during the co-hybridization of the sample with the control (thereby also detecting any imbalances in the genetic content of the DNA being studied).
